March 2013
Matt DeLacluyse, RAECO Rents business development manager

When I was a kid, I earned spending money by mowing our neighbors' lawns. It wasn't tough, it paid well, and I was outside in summer.

I didn't care that my arms would tingle or my legs would still vibrate an hour after I was off the mower. It faded, no harm done.

But would I be so lucky if I had to do that job eight hours a day?

Customers who work with heavy machinery asked me for a device that helps them measure vibration to judge equipment quality, decide on protective gear, and set work/rest plans.

The latest addition to our rental pool, a portable handheld vibration exposure meter can help.

Stay safe,
Matt

Measuring Worker Exposure to Vibration

When you think of danger in the workplace, vibration doesn't rank really high on your list (unless you work on the edge of a volcano), but it's a constant factor in many industries. Long-term exposure to continuous vibration can cause anything from a tingling sensation in the hands and arms or lower back to permanent nerve and tissue damage.

And while there's no official OSHA standard for workplace exposure, our customers are becoming increasingly aware of how vibration exposure can lead to decreased productivity, increased on-the-job injuries and downtime, and disability claims.

Svantek SV106 human vibration meterThe Svantek SV106 Human Vibration Meter and Analyzer is used for whole body and hand-arm vibration and impulse vibration exposure. It's capable of performing both hand/arm and seat transmission measurements, for testing both machine-tool workers and equipment drivers.

It’s available with Root Mean Square (RMS), Peak, Peak-Peak, Vibration Dose Value (VDV), Maximum Transient Vibration Value (MTVV), A(8) daily exposure or Dose results with all required weighting filters. The SV 106 can perform real-time 1/1 or 1/3 octave analysis simultaneously to the meter mode. Data is logged to built-in Micro SD flash card data storage.

The SV106 meets the ISO 8041:2005 standard and is ideal for measurements according to ISO 2631-1, 2 and 5 and ISO 5349.
