Low Particle Errors with TSI Fit Test System

TSI PortaCount is giving me a “Low Particles” error message. What do I do? This question comes up fairly often with PortaCount users. And TSI covers it in detail in the Troubleshooting section of the PortaCount user manual.

TSI recommends, as the first troubleshooting step, to replenish the alcohol supply in the wick.

  1. Alcohol parts for TSI PortaCountFirst, take the white cylindrical wick out of the alcohol cartridge and set it aside to dry. You’ll be able to reuse it later.
  2. Next, pour out any alcohol that’s in the fill capsule, and replace it with a new bottle. Note: If you’re not using alcohol bottle from TSI, make sure what you use is reagent grade (99.5% or better) isopropyl alcohol.
  3. Put a fresh white alcohol wick (your rental kit comes with two) into the alcohol fill capsule and let it sit for five minutes.
  4. Then, take the wick from the fill capsule and put it into the alcohol cartridge.
  5. Reinstall the cartridge into the PortaCount, and re-run your daily test.

If your test still doesn’t pass, it may be your environment. TSI recommends testing in an enclosed space of 400 square feet or smaller. Some customers have told us they improved the environment by sealing off any vents and closing the doors to keep particles from escaping. If your office uses high efficiency air-handling filters, you may need to add a particle generator.

Delivery and returns FAQ

Here are a few of the most-often asked questions about our rental service.

What are my shipping costs?
Normally, we ship to you via UPS ground to keep shipping costs low. If you need expedited shipping or Saturday delivery, you will pay a premium cost for that service. Rentals of $500 value or more qualify for free round-trip UPS Ground shipping. If you need the instrument faster, you only pay the difference in the expedited shipping to get the unit to you. This offer is good on qualified rentals shipped from our Bensenville service center.
Do I pay when the unit is on a UPS truck?
No. Your rental starts on the first FULL day the instrument is in your hands and ends on the day you ship the instrument back. Unless an instrument is schedule for early AM arrival, you are not charged rental costs for the day the unit gets to you. If you need a unit for Monday use, and we have it there on Friday, you don't pay for the weekend.
How difficult is it to return a rental?
Given our goal of the Ultimate Service Experience, we’ve tried to make rental returns as easy as possible. First, with your rental, you’ll receive a return shipping label, pre-paid and pre-addressed to us, plus packing tape to close up the carton when you’re ready to ship the unit back to RAECO Rents.
All you need to do is get the box to a UPS location. One of their fleet of 97,000 trucks will return your rental to us.
Staying at a hotel for your project? No time to get to a UPS location? No problem! Just let us know, and we’ll arrange a UPS call tag at your location (for a nominal fee). One call brings UPS to where you are, and knocks one more task off your To Do list.
I’m finishing my project late in the day. Can I return my rental tomorrow?
Sure. We fully understand when things like this happen. And we don’t add on extra fees. All we ask is that you call and let us know when to expect the rental back, so we can properly schedule it for the next use.
