Matt DeLacluyse, RAECO Rents business development manager

Weather here in the Midwest has been unpredictible lately. On Monday, it was in the high 70°s, well into the evening, and this morning, there was frost on the ground.

Luckily, energy prices seem to be falling, and since I recently installed a new furnace, I'm not too worried.

And even though my new system was sized correctly, I'll still balance the airflow to make sure heat is distributed evenly for maximum system efficiency. Plus, the furnace manufacturer requires regular maintenance to validate my warranty.

Once again, my small-scale, personal need brings me to the real point: If you want to reduce energy costs while keeping workers comfortable and safe, it's time to think about tuning your furnace and checking ventilation system airflow.

Stay safe,

Matt

Furnace and Ventilation Tuneups for Fall

With winter coming on, you'll find your building or plant furnaces running on a regular basis. So it’s time to think about annual inspection and tune-up.

Rent combustion analyzers for furnace efficiency testingMonitoring and tuning engines and furnaces to run efficiently and produce fewer emissions further reduces energy costs and the possibility of harm to workers and the environment.

As you'd expect, new furnaces and boilers operate at peak efficiencies. Older equipment can waste energy in as much as 20 to 30 percent. And while you can't always completely get back to "as new" efficiency, routine furnace maintenance has been shown to reduce these energy costs by as much as 10 percent.

Ventilation testing and balancing toolsSending properly conditioned heated or cooled air to the right locations in the right amounts helps reduce energy costs. Restricted or limited airflow places an unnecessary strain on a furnace that can lead to increased repairs and a shortened lifespan.

By balancing air handling system and running efficiency tests on boilers, furnaces or generators, we can spend less on energy and make people more comfortable and healthy in indoor environments.

Avoid OSHA Fines for Worker Noise Exposure

Monitor worker noise exposure for OSHA hearing conservation programs

Earlier this summer, a Midwest processing plant was fined more than $28,000 for failure to administer an ongoing, effective hearing conservation program. When OSHA officials ran tests at various locations throughout the plant, they found that unprotected workers were repeatedly exposed to sound levels from 98 to 105 dBA.

With a few simple devices, you can accurately measure area sound levels — both indoors and outdoors — and monitor workers' noise exposure levels over the course of their workdays.

See our list of rental instrumentation for sound level and noise monitoring, and make sure you're adequately protecting your workers' hearing.
